Maybe don't recognize Administrative Professionals Day
It's Administrative Professionals Day. Don't forget to give the secretary a firm, but courteous, tap on the bottom and a boisterous "Well done!"
Okay, don’t do that. He or she won’t like that. But also maybe don’t do anything? I may be in the minority on this, but any day that singles out a person for gratitude seems to imply that gratitude is not due or given on other days. This is why Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Valentine’s Day, etc. are all unsavory to me. True acknowledgement, true love, comes when randomly and genuinely felt. Not because "we have to”. Giving a hastily-purchased gift for this reason, if anything, could injure your relationship with a person. And you do not want an injured relationship with your office’s administrative professional.
Administrative professionals make your office tick. They are why anything gets done. And, in a chaotic moment, they alone are likely to have the knowledge to save you. The administrative professionals I have worked with have all been experts in navigating bureaucracy and getting necessary stamps of approval (or telling me which stamps I don’t really need).
Recognize your administrative professional. Every day. But maybe don’t recognize Administrative Professionals Day.
